BORIS JOHNSON: MAYOR BREAKS PLEDGE ON POLICE NUMBERS
Mayor admits original figures were a ‘bit over the top’
Reacting to Ken Livingstone’s comments in his last Mayoral Questions today - where he admitted he will not be providing the 1000 extra police officers as pledged only weeks ago - Conservative Candidate for Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
“Of the 1000 extra officers that Mayor Livingstone said were to be policing the streets, it turns out that 300 of these were for Royal and Diplomatic Protection. And now the Home Office are only providing funding for a fraction of them.
“As my 36 page crime manifesto shows, by shaving money from publicity budgets, I have identified money to pay for more uniformed officers to make Londoners feel safer,
“Not only was his original pledge of 1000 extra officers a sham but his own Government has now taken away the funding for him to meet it.
“He has been forced to admit today that his original promise was a ‘bit over the top.’
“This Mayor is so mired in maladministration and clearly lacking in new ideas that he is resorting to making inflated promises to try and win this election.
